Memphis' Grizzlies tie helps ace Airports Council awards

Monday, November 7, 2016

Memphis International Airport public relations and marketing efforts snagged top honors during an Airports Council International - North America awards program Friday.

The airport carted off the most awards in the council's 2016 Excellence in Airport Marketing, Communications and Customer Service Awards, announced last week in Salt Lake City.

Memphis won for brand identity, video and film production and public relations campaigns and received honorable mention for newsletters and social media campaigns.

Winning entries included a "mockumentary" with Memphis Grizzlies star Tony Allen, a new logo and tagline and a public relations campaign based on the airport's partnership with the Grizzlies.

“It’s very humbling and gratifying to have our peers recognize the Memphis International Airport as the best of the best in marketing,” said Scott Brockman, airport president and chief executive. "In reinventing MEM, it’s critical that we have effective, transparent and creative messaging, and these awards are evidence that our marketing staff and our partners at RedRover are doing this in exemplary fashion.”

The airport has significantly ramped up communications efforts since it was stung by public criticism in 2012 and 2013 during waves of flight reductions and the elimination of Delta Air Lines' hub. The airport hired a new communications staff, led by public information officer Glen Thomas, and brought in public relations and marketing firm RedRover.
