Press Release: Thomas & Betts Donates Over $1 Million to St. Jude, Le Bonheur and The Orpheum

Tuesday, May 28, 2013

Memphis, Tenn. – In the name of immediate past CEO and retiring chairman Dominic Pileggi, Thomas & Betts, a member of ABB Group, last night announced major gifts to three of Memphis’s leading nonprofit organizations: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Memphis Development Foundation, parent organization of the Orpheum Theatre.

The donations are dubbed “The Pileggi Awards” in honor of Pileggi’s personal philanthropic involvement in the Memphis community and his legacy at Thomas & Betts during a significant decade at the company.

“I speak on behalf of all Thomas & Betts employees in the Memphis region when I say nothing would be a better send-off for Dominic than this significant community gift,” said Charles L. Treadway, CEO of Thomas & Betts Business Unit and Regional Division Manager, ABB - North America–Low Voltage Products. “Dominic has been deeply involved in helping make Memphis a great place to call home, just as these three organizations do every day through their mission and community footprint.”

T&B has a rich history with each of the organizations receiving a Pileggi Award. Pileggi announced each donation during a reception at TPC Southwind for T&B employees and community leaders. More than 100 people attended the reception.

“Thank you so much to ABB executive management for supporting the allocation of $1 million to the Memphis community,” Pileggi said in his remarks during the reception. “I know those dollars will be put to good use to improve lives here in Memphis and elsewhere, and that’s important to all of us.”

  • St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the internationally renowned hospital and research system that continues to be transformational in the children’s health sector, received $500,000. For 10 years, Thomas & Betts has supported the FedEx St. Jude Classic golf tournament in Memphis. The tournament has raised more than $26 million for St. Jude since 1970. Richard C. Shadyac, Jr., CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising arm of St. Jude, accepted the gift during the reception last night.
  • Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital Foundation, the hospital’s fundraising and healthcare advocacy arm, received $400,000. Le Bonheur is nationally ranked as one of the best children’s hospitals in the nation. Treadway is a current member of the Le Bonheur Foundation Board of Directors, with Pileggi having served as a past board member. Kavanaugh Casey, Executive Director of the Le Bonheur Foundation, accepted the gift.
  • Memphis Development Foundation received $100,000 to support the Orpheum Theatre, one of Memphis and the Mid-South’s true historical and cultural treasures. Peggy Gann, Senior Vice President of Human Resources and Administration at Thomas & Betts, is a current member of the Orpheum Board of Directors, with Treadway having served as a past member. Pat Halloran, President and CEO of the Orpheum Theatre, accepted the gift at last night’s reception.

“We are extremely pleased to recognize Dominic Pileggi for all that he's done at Thomas & Betts and to be part of the important investments being made in the Memphis community through The Pileggi Awards,” said Tarak Mehta, Low Voltage Product Division General Manager, ABB.
