Part of the Pack: My experience as a RedRover intern

Interning with RedRover changed the course of my career.

As a college senior finishing up my bachelor’s degree in sociology and journalism, I was considering several different post-grad options — and working at a marketing agency wasn’t one of them.

With no formal marketing training and limited exposure to full-service firms like RedRover, I connected with Founder and CEO Lori Turner-Wilson to learn more about the work she and her pack were doing out of Memphis. In just one 30-minute phone call, she had me convinced that copywriting at an agile agency might be the perfect fit for my interests and skillset.

Two weeks after our talk, I applied for an internship with RedRover, and by the end of the month, I was ramping into my new intern role. Though I was living more than 1,000 miles from the Memphis headquarters, RedRover set me up to be able to successfully participate in the program remotely, from my college town.

Some internships involve significant amounts of busywork, leaving little room to engage meaningfully with the company’s mission. However, from the first day of my RedRover internship, I had the opportunity to drive real results for the agency. Pack leaders showed me how my work fit into the bigger picture, ensuring that I always knew how much they valued my contributions.

While I finished my senior thesis and other final projects at school, RedRover stayed flexible by working around my schedule. They gave me the freedom to set my own hours to accommodate my changing needs. As a result, I was able to complete my school, work and internship responsibilities without letting anything slide.

RedRover immediately made me feel like an integral part of the pack. I participated in regular one-to-one meetings with RedRover’s vice president of operations, who gave me valuable personal and professional advice. I got behind-the-scenes glimpses into ongoing initiatives at the agency by sitting in on staff meetings and received an invitation to remotely attend RedRover’s holiday party, where I witnessed just how close-knit the pack is.

After a few months as an intern, I knew that I wanted to pursue a long-term job at RedRover. The positive work-life balance, accessible leadership, purposeful work and fun atmosphere provided exactly what I was looking for in a post-grad position. When RedRover offered me a spot as a new copywriter, joining the pack full-time was a no-brainer.

Now, I’ve been serving as a copywriter at RedRover for more than six months, and I can still say that I learn something new every day. I’m grateful to work for a company that goes above and beyond to support its employees, from celebrating every pack member’s wins to providing unique benefits like vacation reimbursement.
